Solo exhibition

On Saturday 15th December 2012 i organised my first solo exhibition "cirque de masques" which took place at Czar Men's Hairdressing in Huddersfield. The exhibition will be up for 6 weeks so please pop by and take a gander. :)  I based my exhibition around the circus and the characters which are found there. These pieces above were displayed. On the night, the drinks flowed and we had two amazing performances. First up were James Yates Hothersall and Tommy Sutton as "Schlakofv vs T-plus", providing us with some offensive comedic lyrics and a song so deep that it makes u think. Second up was Jonny Stone at JDStone Creations, a keyboardist with amazing talent, creating strong depths to all his songs. On the night i got to meet new people and exchange ideas, sold a few illustrations and all in all had an awesome night. Organising my own work seemed so much more stressful than organising the actual event, but with some experience out of the way i would definately do this again. So watch this space as i hope to organise some more events for the future :) x

Amy Zarah Photography

This week I've been working on a logo design for the lovely Amy Zarah Photography, a very talented photographer i was lucky to make friends with whilst at uni. Her work is a beautiful mixture of alternative models, latex and full of character. Her animal portraits are strong and adorable. You can find more of her work here on her facebook page. Please go check her out :)

Cirque de masques

A poster I've put together today to advertise an exhibition I'm putting together at Czar Men's Hairdressing in Huddersfield- the event can be found on facebook here. I will be displaying new work all with the theme of clowns and the circus. There will be a live performance, free drinks and a raffle. The raffle prize will be a commissioned illustration of the person or a loved one in the theme of clowns.
So please pop down, come and say hi and mingle :) It would be awesome to see you there :)

Wireless magazine- Spitfires

This was a piece i did for Wireless Magazine (17th December 2012). The Image was produced for a pop-up shop which can be found here and all profits go to the charity 'Samaritans'. I'm stoked with the write-up they have given me :)
The image was influenced by the recent anniversary of the spitfire and the annual remembrance day.

"Worship the things you love"

This was a commissioned piece for a friend of mine, and was to be based on her ballet shoe and her love of fairies. After a little thinking i remembered the old nursery rhyme about the woman who lived in a shoe. Taking inspiration of this and pictures of fairy houses i decided to transform the ballet pump into a fairy house and turn the ballerinas into fairies lying round the pump as if it was a religious statue. "Worship the things you love" I seem to have made a smiley face out of the image- very much a happy accident :)

Petit Papillion de nuit

I've been recently working on these banners for a commission for a new alternative fashion blog- Petit Papillion de Nuit. Unfortunately due to a change on layout these images weren't used for the site but together we have a few things up our sleeve to use these images :) I would love to here your thoughts on these images :)

Bizarre Magazine's Reader's Art

So firstly i want to apologise for being quiet for a while on here. I've been working on some fun commissions. A while ago i sent in this piece to Bizarre magazine, a huge alternative magazine based here in the United Kingdom. Today the December 2012 issue came out with my piece inside. I can't tell you how happy i am. I was even more stoked when i saw that HR Giger is featured in the same magazine! The gentleman is a legend and one of the most talented, disturbing and intriguing artists out there. Well he did design the artwork for the Alien films, Dune, Species and Poltergeist 2. What more can i say? haha! One day i plan to visit Switzerland mainly to see his intricate museum.
Every publication and feature i get is just amazing! I don't think this feeling will ever go away :)

"This is how we do it"

So I've been getting into the Halloween mood ready for the next Manchester Alternative and Burlesque Fair, September 22nd. I've been wanting to draw the bride of Frankenstein for a while now. I wanted to twist things round and make this strong woman a slave to the monster, helpless but still sexy :)

Hope you enjoy it! I will be selling prints and cards of it at the fair

Mister Big and Bad and Little Miss red

So again i was writing the other day and thought I'd share a little of what I've been writing so here goes-

"He watched her as she peeled away her warning red jacket, her protection, her armour. He grinned with his sharp teethy grin and licked his lips as she slenderly walked over to him. She stood there transfixed by his glinting full eyes, in complete awe of this beast. He had the power over her and he knew it. Taking her hand he pulled her towards him. An electric spark as their bodies touched. The tension builds between them as he leans towards her, kissing her neck, whilst his hands wander over her body. She can not move. For he is the puppeteer and she is now his toy, his beautiful fragile puppet. He is the monster that draws her in. Mister big and bad, and she is his little miss red."

"Wide awake i feel it- him! i feel him slowly peel back the layers, sinking his hands into my thoughts. Flicking through them like pages in a book. He stops, reads, then pushes them aside. He takes out a pen and looks at the worn out pages which were once pristine. Pages which used to glimmer are now graffitied and water stained from mascara rain. He begins to write again, crossing words out. Scribbling over beautifully illustrated images. Changing the story, the meaning, the thoughts. Torn out, chewed, then spat like pieces of chewing gum you find under your desk. Making a mess, a full on riot. You hear the voice shout, scream and protest."

I want to illustrate these so keep our eyes peeled for the future :)

In a writing mood :)

I've been in a writing mood recently and found myself scribbling away some poems/ half stories on the way back from a trip to birmingham. Would you like to hear them? Here goes....

"Push the boundaries, burlesque their fantasies.
Take the test.
Smiles on their faces, a chuckle in places.
Offend the rest.
Find their weakness, tickle the secret.
Scratch the truth.
Convert their thoughts, the judge in court.
Give them proof."

"Life can twist, and break your wrist,
and through broken hands you still pray, and let the lies just lay.
For is that not a sin, when you know within,
that the father, your saviour, is but a kick in your shin.
For the stories you hear, are chinese whispers i fear,
and show you nothing of the truth, father give them proof."

now for more of a short story i may have to finish- i just love the adjectives used lol-

"So he looked over at her, and watched as she ran her fingers through her auburn hair- the colour of autumn leaves. Her eyelashes dark as a raven fluttered their wings as she peered up from her phone she was texting with. A slight smile rose on her full lips, as she looked back down and carried on. He gazed at her. The perfect figure of a woman. The coach was busy. A late train of 23:13 on a thursday night, full of drunken lads, whom had been out on the town."

As well as this i have some crazy ideas for this christmas. So keep an eye out, because i hope to give you all a little chuckle. Please let me know what you think to these. Feedback is always lovely to hear :)

Light within Darkness photoshoot

Just a few snaps from the photo shoot i did with Samantha Beth Rounding. The outfits shown here were designed and manufactured by Samantha Beth Rounding for her final collection at university. The collection was called "light within darkness", with a faerie theme. Together we worked to bring out the best of the collection looking at light, positions and location.

Wolf eyes

This is an image i illustrated last week based on some ramblings i wrote down a while a go. I've recently started getting little bits of writing inspiration and thought I'd share the image and the text which inspired it. Please remember that these are only ramblings and in which some things may not make sense.

'We hide ourselves behind a masquerade mask.
We appear naive, a wolf in sheep skin.
A deep sense of sexuality and wonder within.
An underlying perverseness.
The fragility of the human body, but the strength of the mind.
A conceptual shark out to devour- to sink you into the depths of lust and sin, at the very moment you lose your grip and control.
You see it!
Feel the water become dark and strong.
It drags you down with that one sharp bite.
Into the depths, you struggle- fighting with every muscle you have.
But nothing is strong enough.
The pain becomes pleasure, swallowed, concealed by it, your mind is no longer part of your outer skin.
Your costume.
The dress you wear for the puppeteer.
You enjoy it!
Lust for it!
Pleasure and sexuality has taken you back, skinned you and the wolf is revealed."

Pin ups and Spitfires

I illustrated this image a few months back as a rib tattoo design for a friend. The main brief was a tattooed blonde pin up with spitfires behind. Working with this i went for a cute pose and classic pin up underwear. A sitting pose fit perfectly and drawing the spitfires in the sky in battle seemed most appropriate. They must be the most beautiful planes I've seen. I'm so happy to be able to post this as i feel it's shown a softer side to my work and allowed me to put together a scene and story :)
I apologise about the lack of posts on here. I've recently done a big piece of various grayscale illustrations which unfortunately i am unable to show until it gets published in a few months, but do expect a few more images to pop up here very soon :)

Smells like Teen Spirit

Today Issue 3 of Teen Spirit Magazine came out. After a call out on facebook for illustrators i responded to the call as soon as i could and sent a link them a link to my website. I received a lovely email back from Dominique and got started straight away looking at the themes which were represented in the magazine. Such as girls, trainers, skating and ink. I chose the theme of the girl and looked into the name of the magazine to produce this piece. I had so much fun collaborating with the magazine. You can check it out on this link here

Bear, Burlesque and Bits and Bobs

The above is an artwork I've been working on today inspired by some of my latest artworks, which are still under wraps until I get permission to show you the public :) I've been having a lot of fun collaborating with people at the minute and receiving quite a lot of artistic freedom. Which is always a bonus for the illustrator. I have recently displayed some work in a little gothic shop in Huddersfield Queensgate Market called Witchcraft and Wiseman. Pop in and speak to the lovely ladies who own it, a mother and daughter partnership. Along with this I am currently updating my portfolios for the Alternative and Burlesque Fair this Saturday 26th May in Manchester at Sound Control. Where I will be selling prints and cards from artworks I've produced this year. So do, if you're in the area pop in and say hi and meet all the epic stallholders who are selling at this fair. There are also performances of cabaret, burlesque and live music :) It should be an awesome day :) I've recently been mentioned on the  Young Creatives site too!  I've got a few bits and pieces in the near future which i am very excited about. So expect to see some more posts soon as i slowly unveil what has been happening.

Record Store Day

Working at "That's Entertainment" in Huddersfield, I get to listen to loads of genres of music, discover new films, bands and artists and be surrounded by inspirational artwork. Since working here my music taste has broadened. So when we got a visit from a local record label about acoustic performances in store, all the staff was enthusiastic and "Record Store Day" felt like the perfect day to start this again. After having a meeting with them, I was asked by my supervisor if I'd be interested in producing the artwork for this event. Excited to collaborate and with full artistic license as long as their were nothing which would offend, i started creating ideas. I got to play with typography and had fun drawing up my octopus :) Each collaboration i do, helps improve my experience with working with clients. After doing this project, i would definately like to work more with the music industry. This artwork is going to be produced into posters and leaflets which will be distributed around Huddersfield, so keep your eyes peeled. So on the 21st April pop down to "That's Entertainment" in Huddersfield, between 3-5pm and come see two great artists and give them some support. Looking forward to seeing you there :)

Shop

I've been working on tweeking sections of my website and decided to add a link to my etsy shop where I am selling art prints. This is a sneak preview of how my shop icon is going to look. I started this off as a quaint little shop, but it now feels like a seedy nightclub. All in all, i like it and i feel it fits in with my recent work :)

You can find my shop by clicking here

Heritage

I did these images back in July 2011, for a magazine submission. Unfortunately these images weren't used but I am very pleased with them so i thought I'd show you :) The theme was Heritage and after being obsessed by tribal fusion dancers over the summer, I wanted to look into the origins of Belly dancing. So after much researching i got in touch with Helena and Natalie who teach traditional Egyptian dancing in Leeds, and they were eager to help me understand the art and gladly danced for my photographs in their traditional clothing. These images are the few i picked out of a variety of different poses.

Etsy and stalls :)

So I've been a little quiet on here recently.... but don't worry I am keeping busy. As well as extra hours at work i have been working on ways to sell some prints. I've put together a new facebook page to promote my work and ventured into the world of selling on etsy shops- mine is here.
In Manchester and Birmingham, Jules Evans (Heresy and Heels) runs the Alternative and Burlesque Fair Quarterly in each city. In May I will have a stall, selling prints and hopefully a few other little suprises :) So please do come and visit me, all info can be found on the link, and enjoy the stalls and performances. I am also in the process of desperately updating my website, adding new portfolio work plus a shop to the site. Along with this my work is being displayed in East London at The Blank Slate exhibition which is open for 2 weeks ending in an auction for the charity NOUR, to help against Domestic Violence.

Spirit

I've been working on this project with the theme 'spirit' in mind. I worked on this a different way instead of going straight into conceptual meanings and looking deeper into the subject i tried to look at the more obvious. I looked at the spirit as a ghost and took it away from it's seriousness and tried to have a little fun and a laugh. This is my end result.
I've entered this in the 'Don't Panic Poster Competition'- if you like this give us a vote by following this link.

Strumpets Bazaar- The new face of Vintage

Back in September i worked with Jayne Horder the creator of the vintage retail business Strumpets Bazaar. We arranged a photo shoot around the local towns of Mirfield and Morley, modelling the clothes sold in her Etsy shop. The photographs were a hit with Jayne and her customers. So in January, Jayne and I arranged a meeting to discuss rebranding her business. Designing a Logo and Leaflets/ double-sided postcard to promote the business.
When designing the logo i went through loads of ideas, taking inspiration from vintage type and traditional logos. I wanted to create that original vintage look- with abit of pzazz! (i love that word). Plus we needed the colour red in there to create that strong look and because Jayne is "Surgically attached to the colour red" (her words). I put that together with two of the images i took earlier in September. My favourite is the girl in the phonebox. This image gave me chance to work my new style of illustration with my photography. I got to mix in a few quirks in there too, finding words like (New) old! Plus in the telephone sign it also says " Get them in every colour". After talking to my brother he said that she looks like a female Doctor Who- which fits perfect with the Vintage theme and 'Time-travelling with clothes'. There should be more to come from my collaboration with Strumpets Bazaar, so keep your eyes open :)

Itch

So I've been away from my blog for a little while, but i have been keeping busy. Between this time I have been back at the photography studio helping out with some online marketing. I have displayed some work to sell in a tattoo parlour in Wakefield and in "That's Entertainment" in Huddersfield. I'm also working on a logo and leaflet.

The above image is the final artwork to my depression series which is the 1st stage, as can be shown in the second image. You may already remember that these images were based on strength, Solace and Support. With this first stage i wanted to show it as more controlled than the others. It's the time when the emotions slowly start to creep in and you begin to hide, emotionally and physically. Where you look in the mirror and start to see things changing but are unaware what is really happening. These will be sent to the Blank Slate Art Competition. A charity to help those who have suffered Domestic Violence.

I've just heard back from this competition letting me know that these pieces will be exhibited in the Departure Cafe in East London for 2 weeks in March and will be up for auction. The money will all go to the charity 'Nour' above :)
So happy :)
